Portrait Session Investment Menu

Portrait appointments may be at our home studio, location studio, your home, outside at a local park, beach, etc., or combination of locations. If the weather is nice then your home and/or local outdoor spot is the best option. Winter and fall sessions are also great outside but the balance between indoor and outdoor shots will be dependent on the temperature outside so we can keep everyone comfortable. Outdoor portraits work well with children so they have room to be active and the backdrop can be varied. We also have limited indoor session dates. Email to see what appointment availability we have. Have a particular place in mind; don’t hesitate to let us know.

When do portrait sessions take place?

Portrait sessions may take place in the morning, since children tend to be well rested. But late afternoon/early evening can work well for some; especially engagement, and senior portraits.

How long does the portrait session last?

A typical child, engagement, or family session can go from 1 to 1.5 hours. If you have a young baby that needs to be fed or changed in between we like to set aside plenty of time to keep you and baby relaxed and happy.

What should we bring to the session?

If we are going to be away from your home, please bring along a few favorite toys for the kids, snacks, drinks, wipes, and blankets, or any other props you would like to use.

What is the best time to shoot?

If we are photographing outdoors, the best time is just after sunrise and just before sunset. We realize this is not always possible. The light at that time of day is generally very flattering and warm. I recommend scheduling the session for early to mid-morning or late afternoon into the evening and dusk. If we need to schedule for midday outdoor, keep in mind it can get very warm and that we would prefer shade.

When should I schedule my newborn portrait session?

During the first 2 weeks of your new little one’s life. A newborn session should be scheduled around the 35th week of pregnancy. I will keep my schedule flexible for the due date time period in order to capture your baby in the first 14 days of life. That is the best time to capture those sweet sleeping poses and to have a cooperative baby.

What if the weather is bad or my child is sick?

If it rains, then I am happy to move the session to another day or to do the session just in your home. Overcast and foggy weather is actually ideal. If your child is sick, please contact me as soon as you can to rearrange the session free of charge.

What should we wear?

This is actually pretty important. Women: do not be afraid to wear that stunning dress or a fabulous hat. Guys: dress those jeans up. Casual does not have to look boring. The idea is to go for something that is stylish, classic, but still you. For a classic look, simple clothing in neutral and solid colors photographs best. For a modern “fashion” look, feel free to bring along some trendy outfits with fun and fashionable colors. When in doubt, it’s ok to have on hand several outfits. When photographing more than one person, please consider their outfits as a whole and keep colors complimentary.

Infants: Newborns are the perfect little people and look best photographed in bare skin (you can also have outfits if you like, but I think less is more).

Families: for family portraits, choose colors in the same tonal range so that no one stands out. Avoid tops/shirts with prints, graphic or lots of words on them. For older children, simple styles, bold colors, and bare feet work great.

Couples: Plan for your shoot by thinking about what you would wear to go out but still be comfortable. Also keep in mind the locations we will be shooting. If you are taking pictures on the beach, a summer dress is a perfect choice. Paying attention to colors that flatter you, avoiding patterns and stripes especially around your face is always a good idea.

Seniors: keep in mind to avoid a lot of prints or anything that might be distracting. Wear something that speaks to who you are; props from sports, the arts or whatever showcases your personality is highly recommended.
